What the #$%^@* is Wal Mart thinking?

I put in 7 years with this company before leaving back in 1987. I started in the Candy dept right before Halloween and worked my way up into Support Management. I met Sam Walton 3 times and he was just a good ol boy from Arkansas with a HUGE vision.

I have been having some issues with Wally world of late and thought I would pose these observations and see if anyone can shed some light onto these subjects or tell me if I am just making a mountain out of a mole hill.

So here we go…..

Why do they constantly move stuff around so you cant find it? I know they think it will make us shop around more and buy other totally unnecessary crap we don’t need, but come on… when I am in a hurry I want to get it and go.

Why do they have over 26 check outs when they only have about 7 cashiersin the whole place and lines backed up for days.

When I worked at Wal Mart in the 80`s, when Sam was alive and the Customers were always right, if you had more than 3 people in line, you had to open up another register.

If that meant Managers, or stock clerks had to check then so be it.

Not true these days.

I was in the “EXPRESS LANE 20 items or less” the other night and there were 8 people in line and some of them had full carts! Cant they read??? I remember when they were 10 items or less. I guess even that isn’t safe from inflation!

Photo Credits go to Cartoon Stock

I can remember when we used to have to turn people away if they had more than the 10 items, but we would open up another register to take care of them. That line was made fore people with 10 items or less…. period.

Customer Service was really important back in those days.

Sam made sure of it.

There was a custom at Wal Mart called the “TEN FOOT RULE”. If anyone came within 10 feet of you, you were to greet them and ask if they were finding everything ok. If they needed help you didn’t just point or tell them where it was, you personally walked them to the item. Now, when they see you coming, they turn around, or look away and if you need help finding something, they have to find the person that works in the dept and they can never be found so they point you in the general vicinity, and wish you well.

I came across this video on youtube and he voiced some of the same opinions I had, so I thought I would share his video, it is quite funny. Oh and by the way… I bought the fountain too… you`ll see what I mean!

Then there is the Customer Service Counter!?!?! That is a total oxymoron.

That is a totalĀ understatement if you ask me. I can remember when you could bring back anything and everything, no questions asked. Now, you almost have to give them your blood type and 1st born to get anywhere. And, if you want your money, well, you better hope you just bought it, didn’t open it, and have your receipt. And the lines…… I was overcharged at the register once, they rang up an item twice. I didn’t catch it until after I had paid. She sent me to the Customer Service desk and there was literally 12 people in the line….. and a Manager and another clerk standing right there just chatting away like there was nobody around.

I really miss the good old days when Sam Walton was alive and running the ship. Wal Mart was a great place to work and shop. But these days, most of the workers hate their jobs, look sloppy, and are just not very pleasant.

Now, there are some rare ones out there that still make me smile. Like our local Greeter Dorothy. She really makes me smile!

I was in line today and the cashier Thanked me for being such a great customer!!!! She was very pleasant and was doing the best she could, considering they had no cashiers and lines full of people. I smiled and told her she was doing great and it would be ok.

Sometimes, I wish they didn’t have such great prices on the things I need the most. I wish people could afford to “have a choice”. But Wal Mart is the king of retail and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

I just wish life could be like it was in good old Mayberry. Where Aunt Bea`s home cooking was always waiting on the table, and kids went fishin barefoot with their Dads right by their side, and the corner Grocer knew everyones name. Where everyone shared a smile and life was so simple. What I wouldn’t give give to live in Mayberry!

Here`s to everyone striving to deliver what they promise.

We have K Mart here too… they did such a poor job they have closed most of their stores. I really wish we could go back to the good old days!

Susan,
I love your last sentence because it is so true. “Here`s to everyone striving to deliver what they promise”. In any business, you must deliver or your customers, prospects, leads, etc. will see right though you!

Thanks for the smiles…I feel your frustration!

Thanks girlie! It is so true. I have learned this the hard way and am embarrassed to admit I still miss the mark on occasion. It was a fun post to write… I kinda feel bad now….. not!

You are right about wishing Sam were back to have better service. We don’t shop there because of the predatory practices and shoddy treatment of their workers and suppliers.

I hope your nice greeter can afford to keep working there and making the experience nicer for everyone she meets.

Take care,

@Sandy & Al Abrams, Sandy,
In todays economy, I find myself having to pinch every penny and it sucks because WM is the cheapest place around. I put in my 7 years there and it is nothing like it used to9 be. I really don`t think this was Sam`s vision. I look at the people they have working there, mostly people who can work anywhere else.

There is even a person at our Wal Mart that is UNDENIABLY…. and I do mean no way you can misatke it… a SEVERE meth addict. Her eyes almost bulge out her sockets and she is the scariest woman I have ever seen. I have only seen her not bugged out once. It is so obvious…. and yet, when I was out of a job and looking for work, I couldn`t get hired… even with 7 years experience and a being a Support Manager! Go figure.

Thanks for stopping by!

The video is so funny and yet so true. I only go in Wal Mart when I am in a huge hurry and do not have another choice.

Business should really be about quality and customer service.

YES!! My kids forced me to shop at Walmart this weekend. Our experience was so bad I told them they would have to walk there if they wanted to shop there again. Walmart has devoted heavy advertising dollars to sharing that they now carry more organic and all-natural foods. Really? In their entire produce department, I found ONE organic item. While in the produce section, I was accosted by a gentleman trying to sell subscriptions to the local paper. Did I mention I was accosted 3 times and that he finally asked me if I’d pay more attention if he put on a Santa Suit? When we cashed out, a pair of socks I’d picked up rang up as being “recalled.” I searched Hanes’ site and can’t find a recall anywhere. All in all, the entire experience was a total fail. Thanks for confirming my commitment to boycott them!

@Pamela L. Reilly, Naturopathhtt, Pamela,
Wal Mart carrying more ORGANIC is totally a joke! I just for the life of me can not figure out why something that requires so much less ie: cost of pesticides, no sugar, free range etc: costs so much more. People need to take action and speak out. This is a conspiracy…. just watch Food Inc and you will see.

Thanks for your comments!

Hi Susan!

What a funny post! You have a great sense of humor about a very frustrating topic. It can really be stressful in those kinds of stores. I avoid shopping there and make a lot of my purchases online. For groceries, I shop almost exclusively at Trader Joe’s. w00t!

As far as Mayberry goes, don’t be fooled! I grew up there (or at least a small town very similar) and we have a different set of issues. There are pros and cons everywhere you go. I try to create “Mayberry” in my heart and that seems to work the best!

Here’s hoping that you find the Walmart and Mayberry of your dreams!

@Nancy Burke Barr, Nancy,
I love you thoughts about creating Mayberry in your heart! We don`t have a trader Joe`s in our area.. I wish we did!

More and more people are shopping online and doing price searches before shopping retail to check prices. I found a great tool to assist me in finding the best price online. It works and it is free!

Susan,

I agree with Nancy and avoid the superstores as much which helps to avoid some of the frustration you are talking about! Trader Joe’s is great and with a lot less headache!

Take care,

Susan,

I totally agree with you. The line situation always drives me crazy. When a company gets that big, leadership and culture are critical. If everything depends on one person (Sam) things will go downhill quickly when they are gone.

It is crazy, we look over all 5 cashier lines, try to determine which one is shorter as we do a visual count of the items in each cart ahead of us… eyeball the cashier to judge which one is “on the ball” and clicking right along… (or is that just me? Ha!) Which is strange in itself, especially if we strolled happily and unhurried as we made our selections in the first place :)

Robin,

That is hilarious… not it isn`t just you!!!! I do the exact same thing… and unfortunately when I made a judgement call between two cashiers, most of the time something happens and I end up getting stuck waiting in line longer than if I had stayed in the the other lane! My impatience never serves me!!

I personally HATE the “10 foot rule”. Target seems to be practicing it, and I avoid going there because I don’t need someone asking me if I’m finding everything OK and trying to talk to me every time I turn a corner. It’s annoying as all get out. I do want them to be available if I need to ask a question, but I don’t want them talking to me unless I talk to them first. I’m weird. I know.

I totally understand your thinking on this one. Back in the day it was “if you made eye contact with a customer”. I would much rather have too much attention than not enough but you are right… there needs to be a balance!
